Also referred to as false teeth, dentures are removable teeth replacements for patients with missing teeth. Most of the people who get dentures would have lost some teeth due to tooth decay or periodontal disease.
Until the 19th century, most dentures were made from animal or human teeth – with George Washington using wooden false teeth. Today, modern dentures are stronger, more durable, and better looking because they use a plastic base.

Immediate Dentures
Conventional Dentures
After your decayed teeth (if any) have been removed, the dentist will ask you to wait for anywhere between 8 and 12 weeks for the gum tissue to heal properly. Once you are completely healed, the conventional false teeth will be placed inside your mouth.
The unfortunate thing about the conventional type is that you will need to go about your daily life without teeth as you wait for the gum tissue to heal.
Getting New Dentures
The process of designing and developing dentures takes several appointments running through 3 to 6 weeks. During this time, you will meet with your dentist, who will help determine the best kind of denture for your mouth, personality, and lifestyle. In particular cases, the dentist might advise that you get dental implants instead of dentures.
- After a proper course of action is decided upon, your dental team will:
- Create impressions of your mouth and jaw to ensure that the dentures are developed to fit you perfectly
- Design models in the exact position and shape the dentures will eventually occupy
Give you a test drive of all denture models before creating the final false teeth
After the model has been perfected, the dental team will cast the last denture. All last minute adjustments will be work on as required until you achieve the right fit and the best comfort.
Life with Dentures
For the first few weeks after they are inserted, your new false teeth might feel a bit odd. This is because your tongue, cheeks, and mouth will have to adjust to keep them in place. You will also have to get comfortable removing and inserting the dentures.
Therefore, although dentures are created to feel and look as close as possible to your real teeth, you still need to learn how to wear, use, and get accustomed to the new feeling in your mouth.
Eating with the new false teeth might take a bit of practice. In fact, you might feel uncomfortable eating with them for the first few weeks. If at all you wore braces in your childhood, then you might remember how you were taught to shape your lips and mouth around them – this also applies to dentures.
Your dental team will advise you to be careful with sharp-edged shells/bones, hard foods, and hot beverages/foods. As always, you might want to avoid anything that is extremely hard or sticky – because these will be harder to consume when you start getting used to the new false teeth. In fact, these types of food might cause the denture mold to slip. When you smile, cough, or laugh, the dentures might also slip.
In these situations, you only need to bite down and swallow gently. The false teeth will slide right back into place.
